For those of you who aren’t from the Midwest, here’s a primer on Superman ice cream, including how it tastes (is it three flavors or one), where to get it, and where it originates from.

What is the Superman Ice Cream?

Superman Ice Cream

We’ve all heard of the DC Comics hero. Superman Ice Cream is simply ice cream with three interwoven hues: red, blue, and yellow, which are the colors of Superman.

History

Superman Ice Cream

The origins of three-color ice cream are really rather intriguing.

The Stroh Brewing Company in Detroit, Michigan is credited with creating it.

In the early 1920s, during Prohibition, the brewery’s owner, Julius Stroh, sought to come up with a fresh product that would keep him afloat.

He eventually renamed his brewery as Stroh goods Company and began producing ice cream, soft drinks, birch beer, and malt goods.

The Stroh Ice Cream Company produced the tricolor taste, but it was not named after Superman since the comics were not published until a decade later.

After Prohibition ended, the firm returned to making beer, but the distinctive ice cream flavor grew famous across the Midwest, and the ice cream was called after the superhero after the Superman comics were launched and received global recognition.

However, due to DC Comics licensing, it can only be found under the titles Scooperman, Super Scoop, or Super Hero.

Later, the official name was changed to Super Rainbow.

However, it is most often known as Superman ice cream.

Flavor

It’s not simply vanilla ice cream colored differently; it’s three distinct tastes blended. The actual tastes, however, fluctuate from shop to store and even area to region:

Color Flavor
Red Black cherry, Cherry, Raspberry, Strawberry, or Red Pop
Blue Blue Moon, a flavor popular in the upper Midwest. The taste is somewhere in the middle between bubblegum and marshmallow.
Yellow Vanilla, Lemon, or Banana.
